Costa Rica has always been the land where it is produced the best coffee in the world, but the poor profitability of the coffee compared to the stock exchange pushes more and more farmers to leave their cultivation to focus on more profitable activities. This represents a loss for the farmers themselves, their communities, and all coffee lovers.
In January 2016 we started our collaboration with Grupo Empresarial Brenes Aguilar, composed of Eduardo Brenes and his brothers Roy and Heiner Aguilar, three passionate supporters of the cause of farmers.
Together with them, we visited many farming families in the San Ramón, Naranjo, and Tarrazú area, from which we buy now. You can read the descriptions of the farming families here.
The agreement that binds Caffè River and Brenes Aguilar includes the purchase of specialty coffee from small families of farmers, paying a very high price compared to the market, more than what is normally required from fair trade market, of which a portion (over USD 2000 per container) is used for social purposes, mainly in favor of the families of the coffee pickers coming from the poorest area of Nicaragua or Panama.
